Dr. Md. Khalilur Rahman is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Department of BRAC University. He was the principal investigator of Nation’s first Nano-satellite program which is named as “BRAC ONNESHA” by BRAC University. He was assigned as the Acting Chairman of CSE department from 1st Sep-14 to 31st Dec-2014. He is the founder of Nano-Satellite Technology Research (NASTER) Lab, BRAC University Robotics lab and the founder advisor of BRAC University Robotics club. The robot named CHONDROBOT, MONGOL-TORI and BRACU-DUBURI was designed and built under his peer supervision. Different versions of these Robots are regularly attending in different international competitions such as NASA Lunabotic Mining Competition USA, University Rover Challenge USA, Singapore Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition etc. Dr. Khalil has joined in BRAC University on 2009 immediately after completing his PhD degree from Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan and promoted as associate professor on 2013. He was a MONBUKAGAKUSHO scholar and his PhD Research topic was Natural Language Processing. But now his research is diverted into Space Science & Engineering, Robotics and Embedded Systems. He was born on 1976 in a river bank city Sirajganj of Bangladesh. After completing his Secondary and Higher Secondary Schooling he took admission in Institute of Science and Technology under National University for graduation and post-graduation degrees. Dr. Khalil became point of contact (POC) of UNISEC-Global (University Space Engineering Consortium) on 2014. In his research and work he could build a very good relationship with government organizations like BTRC, SPARRSO, Atomic Energy Commission, CARGS, ICT Ministry etc. He is also a technical committee member of a Number of International conferences and Journals. He is an IEEE member. S21KT is his amateur radio call sign.

Other Academic engagements:

  • Founder of Robotics Lab of Brac University under which tens of robotics and industrial automation researches are being conducted. Followings are few signature R&D under this Lab
    • UGV and Space Rover Development. This lab became pioneer to develop country’s first space related robot named Chondrobot to compete in Lunabotic Mining Competition arranged by NASA, USA. A Mars Rover names Mongol-Tori is also developed for attending in University Rover Challenge for last 10 years. Currently the research team is designing and developing the space robot.
    • Underwater Robot Development. Robot names Bracu-Duburi became world runner-up in the world in the Robo-Sub Competition.
    • Space Simulation. A simulation team is regularly attending in KIBO Robot Programming Challenge for last few years. Their main challenge is to develop software for space robot like Astrobee. Recently the lab initiated a collaboration to work with MIT Zero Robotics lab and Lincoln Lab. 
  • Founder of Brac University Satellite Lab. With the collaboration with Kyushu Institute of Technology Bracu own nation’s first nano-satellite named Brac Onnesha that was deployed from ISS on 2016. Brac University join UNISEC Global on 2015.
  • Principal Investigator of Autonomous Vehicle project under RSGI research fund of Brac University from Sept 24 to till date where we will be achieving level-4 autonomy
  • Co-Principal Investigator of Soft Robotics project under RSGI research fund of Brac University from July 24 to till date where the team is developing a prosthetic claw to help paralyzed patients
  • Founding Advisor of Robotics Club of Brac University from 2011 to till date to coordinate and arranging Robotics activities, training, workshops and school visits. More than 150 events and activities are arranged under this club platform.
  • Advisor of IEEE RAS chapter of Student Branch from 2020 to till date to coordinate Industry Visit and arranging Robotics Seminars.
  • As a result, the Chief Astronaut of NASA Joseph M. Akaba visited Brac University and as well as the Robotic Research lab.
